AI voice cloning scams are a growing threat to your identity, according to cybersecurity expert Scott Herman.
“This is, hands down, the scariest thing I’ve ever seen,” said Herman, the founder and CEO of IdentityIQTop rated financial protection and identity theft company.
Herman recently spoke to Fox News On the growing threat of artificial intelligence voice cloning scams.
He said all fraudsters need is a 20-second clip of someone speaking – usually downloaded from social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok – to duplicate the voice of a loved one or family member and use it to commit fraud.
With voice cloning and artificial intelligence, scammers can call you and try to trick you into doing certain things, such as sending money or sharing personal information, thinking you’re talking to someone you know and trust.
“All the way to the point where a mother can’t tell the difference between her child and the machine,” Herman said.
Maryland resident Gerry Scully experienced an AI voice cloning scam last month. He received a phone call from what sounded like his grandson, Noah, who stated that he had been in a car accident and had broken his nose.
However, Scully said the voice on the phone sounded slower than Noah normally speaks. So Scully hung up and called his son, who confirmed that Noah was at school and not in a car accident.
Harman said AI voice cloning scams work, unfortunately.
“The worst part of it is that every week we get more calls, see more victims because it’s effective,” he said.
